For some reason, in the last three days, I’ve heard from three old friends that have been gone from my life for 15+ years; that’s totally cool! Shouts out to Emily, Heidi, and Laura!
Since these folks have me kinda thinking about the old days (I mean, really, it was *pre-Internet!*), I figure why not make an open call? If you’re part of Menomonie High School class of 1992, 1993, or 1994, or went to Northland College from 1994-1999 (this is category for you, Em!) and think that classmates.com is *lame* and think that Facebook is kinda lame and not just a little spooky, drop me a line or give me a shout. I’d love to hear from you, what you’re up to, etc., and I promise to write back, too. What a deal, eh?
Better yet, leave a comment on this post, and maybe it’ll turn into something like a little mini-reunion, but without the drunken idiot factor, the “you can only see your friends from this year” factor, and the “OMFG, I’m back in the gym” factor. Or maybe this post will just languish in blogatory (like purgatory, but online for everyone to see).
I would agree that classmates.com is lame, but Facebook — though I held out for more than year — is SO much better than myspace, orkut, friendster etc. I have reconnected with so many more … uh… quality people and folks I lost contact with ages ago. I approve! Plus they have that scrabble application which is awesome when you only have enough time to play a word every now and then. Anyway.
Hi! I wish I could relate to that high school reunion thing but I wasn’t invited to mine. :P
Hiya Laura,
First off, *nice* site! It seems like you and I are traveling similar paths what with the house, the herd, the (not) writing, the young family. Except that my “art” is older than yours; I chose the bujinkan. And don’t worry about the dumb-ass reunion thing; I wasn’t invited to mine, either. Hence, the online gathering.
Unless, of course, you want to come north. I’d love to meet your family, hang out on the beach, swill homebrew, etc. Or I could always dip south out of the Land of Make Believe up here, too. My wife and I seem always to be kicking around the idea of moving to Madison to “get real jobs and culture and something” but mostly it happens in late winter/early spring when cabin fever is peaking. One of these days, though…
I know Barney has been in touch with some people about a 15-year this summer. I’m not sure who is putting it together (nor do I care to be honest) but if you are interested get ahold of Barney. he has the same email service and format as mine.
Moving to Madison? That’s just crazy talk…
Later
Hey Chad,
How’s it goin”? Yeah, I hear you, on both counts. ;-)
A) I’m feeling pretty torn between wanting to reconnect with some folks and see how their doing, and not wanting to go spend a weekend in a (relatively) benign pissing match.
B) Thinking about moving to Madison (or any city, really) is thinking about a whole change of culture and way of life, not just location. It’s a little scary because it’s pretty easy and comfortable here in Wistucky, but I confess to having entertained the notion of selling my soul for having an actual *choice* when I go out to eat. We’ll see what comes of all this.
